Looking For Things to Do This Weekend? Here’s Where to Go (and What to Wear)

Not long ago, you might have found yourself all dressed up with nowhere to go. Or, more likely, you weren’t dressed up at all. But that was then, and this is now—and looking ahead, the cultural calendar is quickly filling up with openings and exhibitions.
This weekend is art-heavy, with note-worthy exhibitions open at the Clark Art Institute, Miami’s Rubell Museum, and Andy Warhol’s old ranch in Montauk; and should you like to visit any of the above, we’ve got you covered with some outfit recommendations. For the Clark’s exhibition on Les Lalannes, Rowing Blazers’s sheep sweater is the most festive way to take in the French couple’s sculpture works. The Rubell’s Kusama installations call for Birkenstocks in the same shade of mirror-y silver as her Narcissus Garden, and at the Ranch, you’ll certainly need a pair of boots.

Should you be out East this weekend, you’ll be delighted to know there is lots to do—but put a visit to East Hampton’s Sotheby’s outpost at the top of your list. There, in a space designed by Studio CAHS’s Caterina Heil, you’ll find vitrines exhibiting Ana Khouri’s fair-trade, fair-mined, responsibly made jewelry pieces. Should you happen to have one of Khouri’s tubular gold rings in your jewelry case, wear it for your visit; along with something from The Row—where Khouri’s pieces can also be found—and a pair of slick Celine glasses.

Before Lincoln Center makes its big comeback this fall, the American Ballet Theatre is taking a little road trip. Beginning next week, the dancers will be piling onto a bus and cruising cross-country to give outdoor performances to the public: Numbers-wise, it’s six buses, three production trucks, and 20 dancers in eight cities. The tour kicks off with a show in Lincoln, Nebraska, concluding at home in New York. To see any of these performances, we’d recommend wearing something a bit balletic: Reformation’s leotard-esque bodysuit; a silken satin skirt in ballet-slipper pink; some ballet slippers, of course, from Loeffler Randal; and a Hill House Home headband as the finishing touch.

If you’re in the New York area, you’ve likely stopped by the New York Botanical Gardens for their Kusama show by now; but there’s more still to see at Miami’s Rubell Musem. Reopening for the first time since 2020’s pandemic shutdown are two of the Japanese artist’s photogenic Infinity Mirrored Rooms—and to mark the occasion, the museum is also exhibiting Kusama’s monumental Narcissus Garden, which will see hundreds of glinty spheres spread across the main corridor. Immerse yourself in Kusama’s world with one of her own scarves knotted around your neck (courtesy of the Smithsonian), and pair it with an artsy jumpsuit from Alex Mill. Some Birkenstocks in the same aluminum-foil shade will keep to the theme, and a very of-the-moment-bucket hat will tie everything together.

Over in San Diego’s lovely La Jolla district is a modernist home by the beach that was (until recently) on the market. Real estate agent Khaki Wennstrom had the brilliant idea to make it a showcase for local artists and creatives at a time when some were unable to keep their doors open due to the pandemic. The model home became an exhibition space for more than just prospective buyers; drop in to see a beautifully appointed space filled with custom-made pillows from San Diegan Jonathan Cohen, who used scraps from his ready-to-wear line; art by Pedro De La Cruz; and interiors wares from Calla Cane and Parachute. Everything in the home is for sale, with 15% of profits donated to a charity of the artist’s choice. Dress for the occasion in something cheerful from Jonathan Cohen; and should you be looking to outfit your home, consider his upcycled pillows, or boards from Mitch’s Surf Shop.

Buried in the Berkshires is the stunning Clark Art Institute, which just last month opened its show on Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne—the stylish French couple known as Les Lalanne. Together, they created animalistic modernist sculptures and fluffy wool sheep that are more objet d’art than nursery decoration. Many of these works are view at the museum, and we have just the thing to wear: Rowing Blazers’s Black Sheep sweater (originally knitted by Warm & Wonderful and made famous by Princess Diana), now available in green, will amuse the museum curators for certain. Top it off with some slick pants from Derek Lam, Gucci slides, and a woven bag from Zara in a bronze that evokes the materials on display.

At the base of One Vanderbilt, a gleaming glass tower in midtown Manhattan, is the just-opened Le Pavillon, a seafood restaurant helmed by Daniel Boulud. Inside the sprawling space you’ll find a leafy oasis that stands in stark contrast to the cityscape views it offers. The food is superb, just as you’d expect from Boulud; who named the spot after one of New York’s most storied French eateries. While dining, why not continue the Francophile theme and don some Isabel Marant (a lovely maxi dress), Clare V. (a woven handbag), Jacquemus (sculptural heels), and Aurelie Bidermann (a chunky gold link bracelet)?

Down at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, visitors will get a taste of Frida Khalo’s Casa Azul in Mexico City. Reconstructions of the artist’s home and gardens will be on display—including a pyramid that showed off Diego Rivera’s pre-Colombian artifacts—along with desert and native Mexican plants. It will be a colorful excursion filled with many photo-ops, so get suitably dressed up with a color-blocked top from Barragán, a Serpui bag in the same riveting blue as the casa, criss-cross jeans, and a pair of fisherman sandals.

In the bucolic, beachy fields of Montauk, Andy Warhol once owned a ranch; now the location for The Ranch, an exhibition venue for art dealer Max Levai. The property’s West Barn houses a 2,500-square-foot gallery for art programming, while at the East Barn guests will find an active horse farm. Opening this weekend, The Ranch is sure to lure all and sundry to the end of the world. On your visit, pay clever homage to the previous owner in a shirtdress from Calvin Klein x Andy Warhol. Boots would be practical, but go the fashion route with Isabel Marant. Festive accessories like a bandana bag from Zara and a link bracelet from Paco Rabanne are also encouraged.

In 1957, the Flamingo Resort arrived in Sonoma Wine Country in a Googie-like, mid-century building. It’s since been delightfully refurbished, with elements of its original facade intact, and reopened this spring as a 170-room resort. Should you feel the need to incorporate the hotel mascot into your vacation looks, we wouldn’t blame you. Alice + olivia makes a festive flamingo-printed shirt, and the pink bird also makes an appearance on a sweet canvas tote bag from Mansur Gavriel. Make it really 1950s with a midi-length skirt from Mes Demoiselle and a pair of red cat-eye sunglasses from Junia.
